WHY STRENGTH TRAINING AFTER 40 ISN'T OPTIONAL
Past 40, you lose roughly 1% of muscle and 2-3% of strength per year if you don't train. That's the difference between picking up your grandkids at 70 and not. Strength training can support muscle and everyday capability. Your coach scales the work around your starting point and health history.
Programming at Hive is built around the big patterns - squat, hinge, push, pull, carry - using barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and machines, all loaded progressively. We don't chase soreness or hour-long burnout workouts. We chase clean reps, slowly heavier weights, and consistent showing-up.
Joints get the same respect. Every session starts with movement prep, every block has scaling options, and we'll swap a movement before we'll let you grind through pain. Your coach adjusts the work around your current limitations, effort and recovery. We do not promise pain relief or a timeline.
Members in their 40s, 50s, and 60s come in from Woodstock, Towne Lake, the Lake Allatoona communities, Hickory Flat, Holly Springs, Acworth, Canton, and Kennesaw. Most train 2-4 times per week in Small Group Semi-Private Training (4:1) or Big Group Semi-Private Training (10:1) formats, often paired with nutrition coaching to keep body composition moving in the right direction.
A workout is one hard hour. A program is a sequence of hours that build on each other. You can work out three times a week for a year, sweat every time, and end the year lifting exactly what you lifted in January, because nothing ever asked your body to adapt to more.
Strength is an adaptation, and adaptations need three things: a stimulus you can recover from, a small increase over time, and enough repetition of the same movements that your technique improves. Randomized workouts give you the stimulus and skip the other two.
“I'm 54, I'd avoided weights my whole life because I thought I'd hurt myself. After six months at Hive I'm deadlifting more than my body weight and my back has never felt better.”
Coach-led semi-private (4:1 & 10:1)

FAQs
Is strength training safe for adults over 40?
Yes - when it's coached, programmed, and scaled. Coaching is the variable. Self-programming on YouTube past 40 is what causes injuries; structured strength work under a coach is one of the safest things you can do.
Will I get bulky?
Almost certainly not. Adults over 40 lifting 2-4x per week typically lose fat, gain functional muscle, and look leaner and more athletic - not bulky.
What if I have a bad knee, hip, or back?
We work around it. Every session has scaling and movement swaps, and many members come to us specifically because previous joint issues kept them out of generic group classes.
How fast will I see results?
It depends on you: your starting point, how consistently you show up, your nutrition, sleep and recovery. We don't promise numbers or timelines. What we do promise is a coach who knows your plan, sessions built for your level, and accountability that follows up. Most people tell us the first thing they notice is that they're actually sticking with it.
How often should I strength train?
Two to three coached sessions a week is where most of our members live, and it's enough to build strength while leaving room for recovery, work, and family. Three to four works well if you've been training consistently for a while. One session a week maintains more than it builds - useful, but slower.
Do I need experience with weights?
No. A large share of our members had never touched a barbell before their first session. You'll be taught the movement patterns - squat, hinge, push, pull, carry - with loads set where you can perform them well, then progressed from there. Nobody is thrown into a heavy lift on day one.
Is strength training safe over 50?
Yes, when it's programmed and coached. The risk in lifting comes from loads that outrun your technique and from ignoring history - old knee surgeries, back flare-ups, cranky shoulders. We assess first, program around what your body actually does, and adjust in the room. Members in their 50s and 60s train here every week.
